Just before Christmas 2015, the fourth and final bottling of The Early Days Collection was released. The name The Messenger looked ahead, a message that now things were happening in our warehouses. A whisky created from large barrels and with an unusual maturity for his youth
The taste picture of The Messenger is more complex than its siblings in the series. Here a quarter of the whisky comes from large sherry casks and complements the bourbon matured base. The smoky notes are softened and develop during the aftertaste. The Messenger was greatly appreciated by whisky writers and the little raw youthfulness from the first three editions did not appear in the same way. A winter whisky that promised plenty of the future.
76 % of the whisky has matured in 130 liter Bourbon Quater Casks.
The remaining 24 % matured in 100 liter Oloroso sherry casks.
7 % of the whisky used is peated.
The Messenger contains no artificial colouring and is non chill-filtered.
Bourbon Quater casks (130-140 liters) were made by Speyside Cooperage from newly emptied 200 liter Bourbon barrels
The 100 liter Sherry casks have been rebound by Thorslundskagge from 500 liter old Olorosso butts.
Until October 2014, our casks have matured in a damp warehouse, where they lost slightly more alcohol than expected. Since October 2014 until bottling, the casks have been maturing in a dry environment in warehouse number 3.
05/11/2015 3 084 kg whisky with an average strength of 59,3% abv was emptied into our blending tank where the strength was reduced to 48,4% abv.
The Messenger was bottled between 09/11/2015 and 12/11/2015-11-12 producing 8 169 bottles. 8 004 bottles were released through Systembolaget the 4th December 2015. The remaining bottles were reserved for sampling at fairs and tasting events and a few international markets.
We recommend that The Messenger is allowed to breathe in the glass for a few moments to reach its peak. Add a few drops of water to help the aromas develop within the glass.
