The Explorer

The Early Days Collection is a voyage of discovery through young whisky and through what is possible to achieve with extensive cask work and accuracy in the manufacturing process. The Explorer is the third edition in the series and was presented in June 2015. For the first time, we examined the taste image of new oak barrels in an official bottling.

The idea is that all four editions in The Early Days Collection will show stages of development that, overall, show the whisky world the story of the beginning of Box Distillery. The Explorer is mainly a bourbon matured whisky that is matured in three different cask sizes of 40, 100 and 130 liter casks. The ages range from three years and three months up to just over four years. Just over 60 percent of the whisky used comes from a smoky distillate, which gives The Explorer a rather smoky touch. Much of The Explorer’s taste profile comes from new oak. Twelve percent of the in going casks are made from virgin oak, new oak barrels that have not been used to store wine or bourbon whiskey. The new oak barrels contribute many powerful flavours. Three oak species have been used for The Explorer: Swedish oak (Quercus robur), American oak (Quercus alba) and Hungarian oak (Quercus petraea). The Explorer thereby becomes a first study in oak and by what a skilled blender can do with oak types and different roasting degrees.

  • 61 % of the whisky is peated (39 — 45 ppm), 88 % is matured in Bourbon Casks (40, 100 and 130 liter), 4 % matured in 100 liter heavily toasted American oak, 4 % matured in 55 liter medium toasted Hungarian oak, 4 % is finished in 100 liter Swedish oak which was medium toasted before charring.

The Explorer contains no artificial colouring and is non chill-filtered.

  • Bourbon casks are rebound into 40, 100 and 130 casks from newly emptied 200 liter Bourbon barrels. All casks underwent a scent check before filling. Deviant scents in bourbon barrels in addition to vanilla and buttermilk were noted in the cask log.

American oak (Quercus Alba) made from heavily toasted white oak which has air dried outside for 24 months.

The casks of Hungarian oak are made from medium-roasted mountain oak (Quercus petraea) from northern Hungary (Zemplén and Börzsöny) stored outdoors for at least 24 months.

The casks of Swedish oak are made of forest oak (Quercus robur) in October 2013 from Nävragöl outside Karlskrona. They were sawn to planks January 2009 and were stored outdoors for 36 months. The barrel has received medium plus roasting before charring.

16/042015 to 29/04/2015 4028 kg of whisky with a strength of 58,37 % was emptied into our blending tank where water was added to reduce the strength 48,3%.

The Explorer was bottled between 04/05/2015 and 07/05/2015 providing us with 10 549 bottles. 10 002 were released 05/06/2015 at 50 Systembolaget stores. The remaining bottles were reserved for fais, tasting events and some international markets.

We recommend that The Explorer is allowed to breathe in the glass for a 15 minutes to reach its peak. Add a few drops of water to help the aromas develop within the glass
